Greenpeace - Fight for our Forests

A 3D printed, hand-crafted, stop-motion animation for Greenpeace Australia’s Forests Campgain, to help shine the light on Australia’s mostly hidden deforestation crisis.

To create the animation within a short production schedule, a replacement animation technique was adopted. This involved Dropbear working with 3D animator Duncan MacDonald, who modelled and built the animal characters using CGI. Once the animated sequences were approved, each frame was 3D printed and hand painted. (There were 77 individual 3D printed models used in the production). Each 3D printed model represented an individual frame of animation that were then shot on set using stop motion animation.

All the sets were hand crafted using traditional model making techniques and then brought to life using different lighting states and special effects such as haze. Cinematographer; Cesar Salmeron Hoving ACS, shot the spot with a probe lens to lend a sense of real-world scale to the models and sets, facilitating dynamic shots that immersed viewers in the miniature world.

Square Pegs

‘Made by Dyslexia’

Made by Dyslexia, a charity led by dyslexics, is using its latest campaign to advocate for the reshaping of global school systems to empower Dyslexic Thinking.

The production for ‘Square Pegs’ involved time in the studio and on location capturing a variety of interesting objects and scenes that represent the profound ‘hole’ the education systems forces all students into. The concept involved perfectly matching each shot in terms of scale and composition so that the hole motif would be the central and unchanging element.

A variety of specialty macro lenses were used to up-scale the smaller objects and enabled the perfect match for the chosen composition. The simplicity of the visual idea was a great starting point to build out this conceptual library of visuals that could edited to the gravitas of Academy Award-winning actor Jeremy Irons’ voice over.

Although a simple idea, great care was taken during production to make sure each shot was perfectly composed, lensed and lit to have maximum impact.
